Морской Бирючок
Морской Бирючок was a protected nature reserve in Kalmykia that covered around 500 square kilometers of coastal land and Caspian Sea waters, including islands and shallow bays. The landscape featured flat terrain with sandy soils, salt marshes, and reed beds shaped by seasonal water level changes.
The reserve was established in 1973 to protect rare animal and plant species and their natural habitats in the region. It was closed and decommissioned in 2014 when the Kalmyk government decided to redirect the land for other purposes.
Since the reserve ceased operations in 2014, there is no organized visitor access to the area. The flat terrain is subject to seasonal flooding, making it difficult to visit outside of dry periods.
The area served as a critical stopover site for migratory waterfowl traveling between northern and southern regions, allowing birds to rest and refuel. The island of Морской Бирючок was especially important as a safe nesting ground for ducks, geese, and rare steppe birds like bustards during their annual migrations.
