Kostroma Moose Farm, Demonstration farm in Bolshoye Andreykovo, Russia.
Kostroma Moose Farm is a demonstration farm located near the village of Sumarokovo, about 25 kilometers east of Kostroma, where moose roam freely across open grounds. The animals are managed by handlers who collect milk and work with visitors throughout the year.
Operations began in 1963 with just two calves, continuing Soviet-era experiments in moose domestication that had started decades earlier. This work shaped how the region approached animal care and agricultural research.
The farm has become a place where visitors see how moose live alongside people, with handlers caring for the animals daily in full view. The setting reflects a local tradition of learning from and working with wildlife in practical ways.
Visitors can walk the grounds daily between 10 AM and 3 PM, with staff available to explain what you see. The farm is open year-round, though the animals are more active during warmer months.
Staff bottle-feed moose calves from birth, creating bonds that allow collection of milk and antler velvet used in medical treatments. These close relationships enable the animals to remain calm during visitor interactions.
