Museum Mikhailovskaya battery, Maritime fortress museum in Sevastopol, Crimean Peninsula.
Museum Mikhailovskaya Battery is a two-story fortification along Sevastopol Bay containing 58 casemates with thick defensive walls. The structure stretches approximately 200 meters and displays the typical design of a naval fortress from the 19th century.
The fortification was built in 1846 under orders from Nicholas I and served multiple purposes during the Crimean War. It later became a significant site for documenting naval military history through its museum exhibits.
The fortification is named after Grand Prince Mikhail Nikolayevich, linking it to Russian imperial history. Visitors can observe how the interior spaces reflect the daily realities of those stationed at this naval defense point.
Visitors can explore the site on foot as the casemates and corridors are generally accessible. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground can be uneven and some interior areas are dimly lit.
During the 2010 restoration, 18 ovens were reconstructed while World War II damage marks were intentionally preserved on the walls. This approach allows visitors to see different historical layers from separate periods in one location.
