St. Alexandra's Church, Rostov-on-Don, Orthodox church in Rostov-on-Don, Russia
St. Alexandra's Church is an Orthodox place of worship in Rostov-on-Don featuring ornamental details, layered domes, and vertical architectural elements of Russian Revival style. The building measures roughly 18 by 13 meters (59 by 43 feet) and displays the craftsmanship typical of early 1900s construction.
The church was built in 1904 to replace a wooden chapel at the Orthodox cemetery in Nakhichevan-on-Don. Over the following years, it received significant additions including a bell tower in 1910 and an entrance vestibule in 1920.
The church is dedicated to Saint Queen Alexandra, with the northern chapel honoring Saint Alexander Nevsky. These dedications shape the religious devotion and prayer practices visitors encounter inside.
The church holds regular Orthodox services throughout the week and runs a Sunday school program for local community members. Visitors should expect to follow local religious customs and dress respectfully when entering.
The church cemetery became the final resting place for Romanian Orthodox soldiers who died during World War II when the city was occupied. These graves tell a lesser-known story of the city's wartime past.
