Norrköping, Industrial port city in Östergötland, Sweden
Norrköping is a city in Östergötland that stretches along the Motala River and is connected by numerous bridges between both banks. The industrial architecture along the waterfalls and canals still defines the appearance of the center today.
City rights were granted in 1384, when the settlement was still a small trading post. Later, the community developed into a major textile industry center through the water power of the river.
The red brick factory buildings shape the cityscape and now serve as offices, apartments, or event venues. In the former industrial halls, concerts and exhibitions take place regularly.
The harbor can accommodate ships with up to 9 meters (30 feet) draft, while the main station offers direct connections to Stockholm and Gothenburg. The city center is easy to explore on foot, as many points of interest are located near the river.
Within the city limits there are over 7,000 rock carvings from the Bronze Age, one of the largest collections of prehistoric art in Northern Europe. Most of these engravings show ships, animals, and human figures.
