Sundsvall, Regional administrative center in Medelpad, Sweden
Sundsvall is a regional administrative center in the historical province of Medelpad in northern Sweden. The settlement stretches across several hills and valleys between two major rivers toward the Baltic coast.
After the major fire of 1888 the new settlement was built entirely in stone instead of the earlier wooden structures. This reconstruction changed the appearance fundamentally and still shapes the architecture today.
The downtown core of red brick and gray granite reflects the rebuilding era of the late 19th century. On weekdays shops and cafés animate the wide streets, while parks along the waterfront provide space for walks.
Flights to Stockholm take less than one hour and run several times daily. Trains and buses connect the surrounding towns of the region with the center.
The St. Olavsleden pilgrimage route starts here and leads through forests and valleys into Norway. Walkers have followed this path across the border to Trondheim for centuries.
