Dannemora Mine

Dannemora Mine is a former iron ore extraction site in Östhammar with multiple underground shafts and tunnels reaching considerable depths, shaping the landscape with its large-scale operation. The complex includes various buildings and structures spanning several centuries that demonstrate how the mine functioned.

Mining at this location began in the 15th century and continued until 2015, making it one of Sweden's oldest mining operations. The ore extracted here was known for its high quality and was used internationally for manufacturing tools and weapons.

The mining tower is today the site's most recognizable landmark and has become a symbol of Sweden's long mining tradition. Visitors can see how this structure dominates the landscape and how surrounding buildings reflect the daily life of mining workers.

The site is located in northeastern Sweden and is accessible by car or public transportation, with the journey offering a chance to see the rural surroundings. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain is uneven and weather conditions vary depending on the season.

One of Sweden's first steam engines was installed here in the 18th century and fundamentally changed mining operations. This technological innovation made it possible to develop deeper shafts and extract larger quantities of ore.
