Orust Municipality

Orust Municipality is a coastal municipality in western Sweden that covers the country's third largest island and around 1,670 smaller islands. A network of bridges and ferry lines connects these islands to each other and to the mainland.

People have lived in this area since ancient times, as shown by burial sites and old runestones. Over the centuries, a strong tradition of boat building and seafaring developed here.

The region is deeply tied to the sea and maritime work. Boat building and fishing have shaped daily life here for many generations.

Daily life is spread across several smaller towns such as Henån, which is the main administrative center, plus Svanesund, Ellös and Varekil. There are no large shopping areas, so it is wise to plan ahead and bring supplies when heading to the smaller islands.

The area is home to two major shipyards that build vessels sold to international markets. These boatyards have long been the backbone of the local economy and shape the character of the municipality.
