Akkajaure

Akkajaure is a hydroelectric reservoir in Stora Sjöfallet National Park, created as part of the Lule River water management system. The lake stretches across a long valley, bordered by steep mountain walls and deep water suitable for various activities.

The reservoir was created by the construction of the Suorva dam starting in the early 1900s, marking a major industrial development in the region. This project harnessed the river's power for electricity generation and shaped the modern landscape of northern Sweden.

The name comes from the Lule Sami language, reflecting the indigenous roots of this part of Lapland. Local Sami culture remains visible in how people relate to this landscape and its resources.

Water levels change significantly due to hydroelectric operations, affecting fishing conditions and water activities throughout the year. Visitors should check current conditions before planning water-based activities or accessing shoreline areas.

The Áhkká mountain massif rises dramatically from the water with one of Sweden's steepest vertical drops, creating a striking contrast between the lake and the surrounding rock face. This natural formation makes the shoreline along this mountain particularly memorable for visitors.
