Storuman Municipality

The municipality spans a large territory combining mountain terrain in the west with forests, lakes, and wetlands in the east. This varied landscape creates distinct environments across the region.

The municipality was formed in 1971 through the merger of two earlier districts that took shape during 19th-century reforms. This consolidation created the modern administrative structure.

Winter sports are deeply rooted in local identity. The four main towns of Storuman, Stensele, Tärnaby, and Hemavan have produced numerous skilled skiers who are central to how people here see themselves.

Access to different parts varies with the season and weather, especially in the western mountain areas where snow affects travel. It helps to check local conditions before visiting as infrastructure development differs across the territory.

The area includes part of one of Europe's largest nature reserves, Vindelfjällen. This extensive protected zone preserves wilderness with high ecological value and draws nature enthusiasts.
