Stora Hammars stones, Viking Age image stones in Lärbro parish, Gotland, Sweden.
Stora Hammars consists of four tall stone monuments carved with intricate Viking-age imagery in the parish of Lärbro on Gotland. Each one displays scenes arranged in horizontal panels that cover much of the stone surface.
These stones were carved around 1400 years ago and stand among the earliest Viking monuments in Scandinavia. They record a period when Norse art and belief were reaching a peak of creative expression.
The stones display figures of warriors, Valkyries, and the god Odin, revealing what mattered most in Viking religious life. Looking at them, you sense how central these divine beings were to the people who lived here.
The first and third stones remain better preserved and show carved details more clearly, while the other two have weathered considerably over time. Plan to spend time looking closely at all the panels to spot the different figures and scenes.
Stone I stands out for its six separate narrative panels that tell multiple stories side by side on one surface. This arrangement reveals how the carvers wanted to compress layers of meaning into a single monument.
