Leksaksmuseet, Toy and working life museum in Södermalm, Sweden
Leksaksmuseet is a toy and working life museum in Södermalm housing more than 40,000 objects from different eras. The collection includes collectible figurines, plush toys, tin playthings, and other items displayed across underground chambers.
The museum occupies former military tunnels built by the Swedish army at the start of World War II. It opened on August 30, 1980, and has remained in these protected underground spaces since then.
The collection reflects how toys shaped childhood across different periods and social circumstances. You can see how playthings evolved as society and families changed over time.
The museum is located in Södermalm and is easily accessible by bus or metro. Since the exhibition is underground with narrow passages and low lighting, it helps to move at a relaxed pace and allow time for your eyes to adjust.
A split automobile serves as an exhibition stand in the model cars section, with vehicles displayed across the interior surfaces. This creative approach uses the car itself as the framework for showing the collection.
