Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
The Icehotel is a structure made of snow and ice in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, spanning more than 6000 square meters and including rooms, suites, and common areas. All structures are built entirely from blocks harvested from the Torne River.
The building opened in 1990 after Japanese ice artists created an exhibition in 1989. Visitors then asked for the first time if they could spend the night inside the ice structure.
Each winter season, invited artists from different countries design new room interiors and sculptures, turning ice blocks into temporary works of art. Visitors can walk through the rooms and see how each chamber develops its own visual language.
Guests receive thermal sleeping bags and instructions for sleeping at -5°C (23°F), while standard heated rooms remain available throughout the stay. Warm clothing and waterproof boots are recommended, as the temperature inside the ice areas stays constantly below freezing.
The structure melts completely during spring, returning all its ice and snow components to the Torne River. Each winter edition differs from the previous one, as the material is reshaped annually.
