Cityterminalen, Transportation hub in Norrmalm, Sweden
Cityterminalen is Stockholm's main bus station in the Norrmalm district, handling hundreds of daily departures to cities across Sweden and Europe. The facility contains waiting lounges, ticket counters, shops, and cafes all in one building, with a direct connection to Stockholm Central Station.
The station grew from a municipal plan launched in 1982, with construction beginning in 1985 and opening on January 20, 1989. It was one of Sweden's first major building projects entirely designed using computer technology.
The terminal's design incorporates Finnish red granite facades, replacing initial brick plans through increased construction funding.
The terminal brings together ticket counters, waiting areas, restaurants, and shops in one location, making it easy to find what you need. Its direct link to the main train station helps visitors switch between bus and train travel smoothly.
The building received red Finnish granite cladding after budget increases allowed the original brick plans to be abandoned. This unexpected material choice gave the structure its distinctive appearance.
