Nytorget

Nytorget is a central square in Södermalm featuring two distinct sections that serve different purposes. The space includes an artificial grass area, a decorative pond, multiple benches, lush tree plantings with seasonal flowers in the northern section, while the southern area contains a large gravel playground designed for children.

The square has a dark past as an execution site during medieval times and later became known for publicly displaying Jacob Johan Anckarström, the assassin of King Gustav III, in 1792. These tragic events mark the deeper history of the location, which has since transformed into a peaceful community space.

This space serves as a meeting point where neighbors gather on benches to socialize and watch daily life unfold. It functions as part of the local community's everyday rhythm, especially during warmer months.

The northern section provides public restrooms and a seasonal cafe for visitors seeking a break. It is easy to navigate the square as the functional areas are clearly separated, with the play area in the south and the quieter garden in the north.

A remarkable bronze sculpture titled 'Lek' by artist Bror Hjort has graced the square since 1935, adding an artistic dimension to the space. This subtle artistic element is often overlooked by visitors despite being an important part of the location's visual identity.
