Ansgar monument, Stone memorial in Björkö, Sweden.

The granite monument features a large cross structure positioned at the elevated point of Borgberget, overlooking the surrounding Baltic waters.

The monument, erected in 1834, marks the location where Archbishop Ansgar conducted his first Christian mission to Sweden in the year 829.

This memorial represents the beginning of Christian influence in Sweden, standing at the former Viking settlement of Birka where the first Swedish congregation formed.

Visitors can reach the monument by following marked paths from the Birka Museum, with regular boat services operating from Stockholm during summer months.

The monument stands on ancient castle grounds that contained fortifications dating back to the 8th century, when Birka served as a major trading center.
