Capitol, Art deco movie theater in Vasastan, Stockholm, Sweden.
The Capitol is an art deco movie theater in the Vasastan district of Stockholm with two screens and a total of 184 seats. The rooms are equipped with both modern digital projection and older 35mm film technology to show current blockbusters as well as classic films.
The theater opened in 1926 as a larger cinema with 639 seats and underwent several renovations over the decades. After closing in 1985, it remained inactive until its reopening in 2018 following a major restoration project.
The theater retains its original 1920s design with arches, columns, and ornamental plasterwork that create a distinctive setting for watching films. Walking through the space, you feel the weight of decades spent as a gathering place for moviegoers.
The cinema is located at Sankt Eriksgaten 82 in a central part of Stockholm and is easily accessible by public transportation. The two screens are modest in size, making for a relaxed viewing experience in comfortable proximity to the film.
The interior features custom-made rug patterns and a color scheme of turquoise and Bordeaux that deliberately departs from the typical red cinema decor. This unexpected color choice creates a refreshingly different environment when visiting.
