Centrumhuset, Göteborg, Commercial building in central Gothenburg, Sweden
Centrumhuset is a commercial and office building in central Gothenburg with a stepped architectural design. It displays three stories facing Kungsgatan and six stories toward Östra Hamngatan, with light-colored plastered facades and retail spaces on the ground floor along with offices above.
The building was designed by architect Nils Einar Eriksson and constructed between 1936 and 1937 for an insurance company. It emerged during a period when Gothenburg was modernizing and reshaping its city center.
The building has housed various local retail businesses over the decades, from fashion stores to antiquarian bookshops. These shops continue to shape the street life and make it an active part of the shopping district.
The ground floor contains multiple retail spaces, while upper levels house offices accessible through the main entrance on Östra Hamngatan 52. Its location at the intersection of two main streets makes it easy to find and provides straightforward access to different areas.
The building retains an original passage connecting Kungsgatan and Larmgatan that reflects 1930s functionalist architecture. This passage demonstrates how Gothenburg designed its city center with modern connecting pathways.
