Malingsbo-Kloten, Nature reserve in Dalarna, Sweden
Malingsbo-Kloten is a nature reserve spanning two regions with roughly 140 kilometers of marked trails that lead through forests, lakes, and wetlands. The terrain includes old forests mixed with open areas and waterways, creating different types of habitats across the protected land.
The area became protected in 1981 as one of central Sweden's first large nature reserves. This designation helped secure long-term survival for one of the region's largest remaining wilderness territories.
The reserve reflects Swedish outdoor traditions where visitors walk marked paths and fish in natural waters as part of their relationship with the land. This shared use shows how the landscape remains woven into daily life and recreation.
The reserve has minimal facilities, so visitors should bring most supplies from nearby towns before arriving. There are parking areas at several trailheads and basic shelter options scattered throughout the territory for overnight stays.
The territory has one of the world's highest concentrations of moose while also serving as one of Sweden's few designated wolf territories. This combination means visitors might encounter signs of large predators that have disappeared from most of Europe.
