Runsa, Historic estate and fortress ruins in Upplands Väsby Municipality, Sweden
Runsa is a manor estate with remains of an ancient fortification situated on a 30-meter-high promontory overlooking Lake Mälaren. The site combines a 17th-century manor building with archaeological remains spanning different periods of Swedish history.
The fortification was built in ancient times, while the manor house was constructed during the early modern period. Systematic archaeological work began in the early 20th century and revealed multiple settlement layers at this location.
The stone ship burial site here contains graves from the Migration Period arranged in a distinctive formation. These burial grounds show how ancient communities honored their dead in this region.
The site is open for exploration, allowing visitors to see both the manor building and the ancient ruins. The elevated location provides good views across the lake and surrounding landscape.
The stone ships date to the Migration Period and represent a rare example of this ancient burial practice. Such graves are found at only a handful of locations in Sweden.
