Saint Thomas Church, Lutheran church in Vällingby, Sweden
Saint Thomas Church is a Lutheran chapel in Vällingby with a horizontal building design and a tower positioned behind the sanctuary. Inside, twenty bells hang within a concrete framework, while clay tiles cover the floor throughout.
Architect Peter Celsing completed this church in 1960 after six years of planning and building work. Student masons were hired during construction to keep expenses down.
The building expresses its design through red brick walls and concrete construction that shapes the interior spaces. Visitors experience a simple, modern aesthetic that contrasts with the busy commercial surroundings outside.
The building opens directly from the town square through a recessed entrance door that leads into an entry area. From there you can access both the parish spaces and the main worship room.
The building was constructed using red bricks from Helsingborg, a material sourced from another city in southern Sweden. This choice of brick type gives the church its distinctive warm color.
