Tomteboda postterminal, Mail terminal facility in Solna Municipality, Sweden
Tomteboda is a postal terminal in Solna comprising five separate structures built with prefabricated concrete and yellow wooden cladding elements. The entire complex spans more than 100,000 square meters and serves as a mail sorting and distribution hub.
The terminal was built between 1981 and 1983 and represented one of Sweden's most advanced and automated mail sorting centers. This project marked a significant moment in the modernization of Swedish postal infrastructure.
The facility was designed from the start to include artworks by various artists commissioned by the Swedish Public Art Agency. These artistic interventions bring character to the industrial space and demonstrate how art and practical function can coexist.
The location near railway tracks and major highways allows efficient mail transport by both train and truck, making it a well-connected logistics hub. Visitors should know this is an active working facility, so access may be limited.
The track hall features a notable roof made of glued laminated timber with curved arches, illuminated by eight roof lanterns above the railway tracks. This roof design shows particular attention to bringing natural light into what would otherwise be a dim industrial space.
