Tomtebodaskolan, Educational institution in Tomteboda, Sweden
Tomtebodaskolan is a former school for visually impaired students in Tomteboda, north of Stockholm, Sweden. The building was purpose-built in 1888 and included a gymnasium and a swimming hall on the same grounds.
The school was founded in 1879 and moved to its purpose-built site in Tomteboda in 1888. In 2001, the institution relocated to Campus Konradsberg on Kungsholmen, leaving the original building to take on a new role.
Photographer Sten Didrik Bellander documented life at the school through black and white photos showing how visually impaired students learned and spent time together. These images are now among the few visual records of daily life at the site.
The building is on Campus Solna and is visible from the outside, but public access inside is not available. Walking around the campus area gives a good sense of the site, and daytime is the best time to visit.
From 2005 to 2018, the main building housed the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, an EU agency that tracked health risks across Europe. A building once built for children with visual impairments later becoming home to a continent-wide health agency is a rare turn for any site.
