Bällsta radartorn, Radar tower in Bromma district, Sweden
Bällsta radar tower is an air traffic control radar facility near Bromma Airport with a white spherical protective dome. The dome spans about 16 meters across and sits atop a 20-meter concrete support shaft that can be seen from the airport area.
The radar installation was built in 1964 and has monitored both civil and military air traffic over Stockholm since then. The entire radar system received a complete overhaul in 2014 to keep it current with modern technology.
Local residents call this structure 'Golfbollen' because it looks like a giant golf ball sitting on a concrete tee.
The tower sits near Bromma Airport and is visible from various points around the airport area. Keep in mind this is an active facility and the site itself is not open to the public for close access.
This radar facility affects building height regulations across Stockholm due to its coverage requirements. The spherical design was chosen specifically to optimize how radar signals bounce in all directions.
