Maribor National Drama Theatre, National drama theatre in Maribor, Slovenia
The Slovene National Theatre Maribor is a large cultural institution with five artistic departments: Drama, Opera, Ballet, Symphony Orchestra, and a theatre festival. The building contains several performance spaces and underwent major renovation between 2002 and 2003 to enhance its facilities.
The building was designed by railway engineers Adam Wiesinger and Gustav Lahn and opened on January 20, 1852 with Friedrich von Flotow's opera Martha. Since its foundation, it has developed into a leading cultural centre in the region and plays an important role in Slovenian theatre.
The theatre hosts Borštnikovo srečanje, a national festival celebrating and evaluating Slovenian theatrical art since 1965. Visitors can experience the range of contemporary Slovenian drama when artists from across the country gather here.
The theatre is centrally located in Maribor and is easily accessible by public transport. Visitors should check the current programme before their visit, as shows rotate between drama, opera, ballet, and concerts.
Throughout its long history, the theatre has produced over 900 drama premieres, 450 opera productions, and around 100 ballet works with international artists. This impressive artistic record makes it one of Europe's most productive theatres.
