Maribor Castle, Renaissance castle in central Maribor, Slovenia
Maribor Castle is a Renaissance fortress in central Maribor in Slovenia with thick stone walls and multiple towers. Inside, the grand Festive Hall features ceiling paintings showing battles created by Johann Gebler in 1763, and the rooms now hold museum collections.
Emperor Frederick III ordered construction of this fortress between 1478 and 1483 to strengthen the town's northeastern defenses. A bastion was later added to the eastern side to update its military design for newer weaponry.
The museum housed within the castle shows exhibits about local traditions and how Maribor developed over time. Visitors walking through the rooms can learn how people here lived in different periods.
The best way to explore is to move through the rooms and exhibition areas one by one to see all the details. Comfortable shoes are helpful since the floors are uneven and there are stairs connecting the different levels.
A bastion on the eastern side was designed by architect Domenic dell'Allio and built between 1556 and 1562. This addition shows how the fortress was redesigned to handle the new military technology of the time.
