Grintovec, Mountain summit in Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Slovenia
Grintovec is a summit in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps that rises to 2,558 meters and features a gently sloping structure of limestone and dolomite rock. The peak has well-marked hiking paths that lead visitors upward through these distinctive rock formations.
The botanist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli completed the first documented ascent in 1759, marking the beginning of recorded mountaineering on this peak. This early climb established the mountain as a destination for those interested in alpine exploration.
The mountain hosts an annual mountain running competition where athletes race up steep alpine trails to test their endurance. This event draws people who come to witness or participate in one of the toughest uphill races in the region.
The main approach starts from Kamniška Bistrica following well-marked trails with a steady elevation gain of around 1.000 meters to the summit. The route passes through forested sections before opening onto alpine terrain as you climb higher.
The peak ranks as the second most prominent mountain in Slovenia with a prominence reaching 1.706 meters, surpassed only by Mount Triglav. This geological distinction makes it one of the most significant summits in the country's alpine geography.
