Grintovec, Mountain summit in Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Slovenia
Grintovec is a summit in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in Slovenia, built mainly from limestone and dolomite rock. It is the highest peak in this mountain range, with marked hiking trails that pass through forested slopes before reaching open alpine terrain near the top.
The botanist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli made the first documented ascent of this peak in 1759, driven by a scientific interest in the plants growing at altitude. This early visit helped establish the mountain as a known destination in the alpine world.
Every year, a mountain running race is held on the slopes of this peak, drawing runners who push themselves up steep alpine terrain. The event has become a regular fixture in the local sporting calendar and is known as one of the toughest uphill races in the region.
The most common starting point is Kamniška Bistrica, where marked trails lead steadily upward through forest and then onto open rocky ground. Solid footwear is strongly recommended, as the upper sections are steep and uneven.
Although Triglav is the most famous peak in Slovenia, Grintovec holds the second highest topographic prominence in the country. This means that it stands out more independently from the surrounding terrain than almost any other summit in Slovenia.
