Skuta Glacier, Alpine glacier in Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Slovenia
Skuta Glacier is an ice formation situated beneath Mount Skuta, stretching between approximately 2020 and 2110 meters elevation in the Municipality of Jezersko. The formation lies in a steep mountain valley surrounded by rocky peaks and ice-capped slopes.
The glacier was originally larger and has lost significant size since the early 20th century. This change is part of the broader ice loss occurring across the Alpine region.
The glacier serves as an important place for researchers to observe climate changes in the Alps. Regular measurements here show how the mountain landscape is transforming.
A well-developed walking trail leads to the glacier from the surrounding peaks, making exploration manageable. Visitors should bring warm clothing and sturdy boots when planning a visit, as high-altitude conditions can be harsh and unpredictable.
It is the southeasternmost glacier in the entire Alps, making it an unusual location for ice to persist in a mountain range this far east. Its position at the eastern edge of the Alpine region creates a special window for climate research in southeastern Europe.
