Metelkova, Cultural center in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Metelkova is an arts complex in Ljubljana consisting of multiple buildings decorated with colorful murals, sculptures, and installations created from repurposed materials. The spaces house independent clubs, galleries, artist studios, and performance venues spread across the entire compound.
The site originated as an Austro-Hungarian military barracks but was rescued from demolition in 1993 when volunteers occupied and protected it. Since then it has evolved into a center for independent art initiatives and underground music culture.
The site serves as a gathering place for independent music venues and galleries where the local art community actively creates and exhibits work. These spaces reflect grassroots artistic values and host performances that showcase experimental and alternative music from the region.
The complex is open daily with most events and concerts starting in the evening hours. Visitors should check the current schedule beforehand as the program varies depending on the season and which venues are active.
The site emerged from a spontaneous occupation and is still managed and operated by the artists themselves today. This self-governed structure makes it one of the few cultural spaces in Europe where the artistic community maintains complete control over the programming and operations.
