Navje, Memorial park and cemetery in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Navje is a memorial park and cemetery behind Ljubljana Railway Station featuring granite memorials, tombs, and gravestones arranged along walkways and beside an arcaded building. The grounds include multiple sections with benches, circular promenades for walking, and designated areas to learn about Slovenian historical figures.
Originally established as St. Christopher's Cemetery in 1779, the site was transformed into a memorial park between 1937 and 1938 under architects Jože Plečnik and Ivo Spinčič. After World War II, four columns intended for another building were incorporated into the park design following Plečnik's plans.
The grounds hold the graves and memorials of many Slovenian writers, poets, and artists who shaped the nation's intellectual life. Visitors come to pay respects to figures whose work remains central to Slovenian culture today.
The grounds are easy to reach, located within walking distance of the railway station with multiple entrances and marked pathways for exploring. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain is hilly and it is good to allow time for a leisurely walk through the different sections.
The four granite columns standing in the park were originally reserved for Ljubljana's Music Society building and were only installed here after World War II. They create an interesting architectural link to a different part of the city that many visitors overlook.
