Bled Island, Lake island with church in Bled, Slovenia
Bled Island is a natural island sitting in Lake Bled in Slovenia, home to the Church of the Assumption and the Provost's House. A wide stone staircase connects the landing dock directly to the church entrance at the top.
Before Christianity arrived on the island, a pagan temple dedicated to a Slavic fertility goddess stood on this site. A Christian chapel was built here in the 8th century, and the church was rebuilt and expanded several times over the following centuries.
The Church of the Assumption serves as a wedding destination where grooms carry brides up 99 steps to reach the entrance. This ritual has turned the place into a symbol of love that attracts visitors from around the world.
The island can only be reached by boat, and traditional wooden pletna boats depart regularly from several points around the lake during daylight hours. Arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon tends to mean fewer people and a calmer crossing.
The bell rope inside the church is connected to a wish bell that visitors are invited to ring three times. The bell now hanging in the tower was cast in Rome in the 17th century and brought here to replace an earlier one lost in the lake.
