Adergas monastery, Dominican monastery in Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia
Adergas monastery is a Dominican monastery in Cerklje na Gorenjskem featuring a Baroque church designed by the Venetian architect Candido Zulliani. The buildings surround a central courtyard and garden, forming a unified monastic layout.
The site was founded in 1238 by the Patriarchate of Aquileia as a religious center for the region. It suffered major damage during an invasion in the 15th century and required substantial rebuilding afterward.
The monastery holds the Velesovo Madonna, a painted wooden sculpture from the Middle Ages that ranks among the oldest religious artworks in Slovenia. This piece remains central to how the community understands its spiritual heritage.
The monastery now houses a school, parish offices, and residential areas that can be visited through organized tours. Allow time to explore both the church interior and the surrounding courtyard areas.
The eastern wing was designed in the early 18th century by architect Gregor Maček Jr. and displays characteristic Baroque building techniques. This section shows how the community modernized its facilities during that period.
