Kriváň

Kriváň is a 2,494-meter peak in the High Tatras with a distinctive pyramid shape formed by granodiorite rock. Its recognizable outline can be spotted from numerous viewpoints across the region.

In the 19th century, Slovak patriots organized regular pilgrimages to the summit, establishing it as a central symbol in the nation's story. These journeys reinforced its importance as a gathering place for collective identity.

The peak appears frequently in Slovak art and photography, holding deep meaning for people as a symbol of their mountain heritage and national identity.

The best time to climb is between mid-June and early November when weather and snow conditions are most favorable. The main trail begins at Tri studničky and passes through Grúnik on its way to the summit.

The southwest ridge offers a direct climbing route with sweeping views of surrounding peaks and valleys in the High Tatras. Many visitors overlook this alternative to the more commonly traveled main trail.
