Muránska planina, National park in District of Brezno, Slovakia.
Muránska Planina is a national park in the Brezno District featuring limestone ridges, dolomite formations, and numerous caves hidden throughout the landscape. The terrain includes vast grasslands, forested slopes, and exposed rocky outcrops that create a mix of open and wooded environments.
The park was established in October 1997 to protect the landscape and its natural features. Within its borders stand the ruins of Muráň Castle, a royal fortress built in the 13th century that once guarded the surrounding territory.
Sheep farms scattered across the park allow visitors to watch traditional cheese making and sample local dairy products that are made during the summer season.
The park has marked hiking routes that connect different areas and viewpoints throughout the territory. Main entry points are located near the villages of Muráň and Závadka, where you can find information and start your explorations.
A historic rack railway still operates between Pohronska Polhora and Tisovec, running through the park using original 19th-century engineering. This narrow-gauge train was originally built for mining transport but now carries visitors along a scenic mountain route.
