The Northern Province is an administrative region in the north of Sierra Leone with varied terrain including mountains, valleys, and wetlands. The area stretches between the Guinea border and central Sierra Leone.
The province was reorganized in 2017 and became one of Sierra Leone's five main administrative divisions. This administrative change replaced an older regional structure.
The Temne people form the main population group here, with Limba, Kuranko, Mandinka, Loko, Fulbe, and Yalunka communities also present. These different groups shape everyday life through their languages, crafts, and market gatherings.
Makeni serves as the main center, offering administrative services and market facilities where visitors can find supplies and information. The region follows agricultural seasons with distinct dry and rainy periods.
The Outamba-Kilimi National Park in the northeast is home to elephants, buffalo, and many bird species in their natural habitat. This protected area offers rare chances to see large wildlife in the wild.
