Northern Province, Sierra Leone, Administrative region in northern Sierra Leone
The Northern Province is an administrative region in the north of Sierra Leone, bordering Guinea, and covering mountains, valleys, and wetlands. Makeni is the main urban center of the region, serving as a hub for trade and local government.
The current Northern Province took its present form in 2017, when a national reform divided Sierra Leone into five administrative provinces. Before that, the area had been part of a larger northern region that dated back to the colonial period.
The Temne are the largest group in the province, and their language is widely heard in daily life. At markets, especially in Makeni, you also meet Limba, Kuranko, and Mandinka communities, each bringing their own crafts and trading customs.
Roads between towns can become difficult during the rainy season, so a vehicle with good clearance is a practical choice. Makeni is the best starting point for travel around the region, as most facilities for visitors are concentrated there.
The Outamba-Kilimi National Park in the northeast of the province is one of the few protected areas in West Africa where forest elephants still roam freely. The park receives very few visitors because of its remote location, making wildlife watching there a genuinely quiet experience.
