Matam Region, Administrative region in northeastern Senegal
The region of Matam stretches across 29,445 square kilometers between the Senegal River and the Sahelian plain, containing numerous baobab trees throughout its territory.
The region, established on February 15, 2002, developed from ancient trade routes connecting different sections of Senegal with neighboring countries through the Senegal River valley.
The Pulaar-speaking Toucouleur people form the main population of Matam, maintaining traditional practices through regular community gatherings focused on music and storytelling.
The region consists of three departments - Kanel, Matam, and Ranérou Ferlo - with a population of 833,657 residents spread across multiple communes and rural communities.
The Ndendory phosphate deposit in Matam contains 40.5 million tons of resources, positioning the region for future industrial development.
