Harbaqa Dam, Ancient Roman dam near Palmyra, Syria
Harbaqa is an ancient Roman dam near Palmyra designed to manage water flow across the region. The structure combines rubble and concrete foundations with carefully fitted stone facing to withstand water pressure.
This dam was built during the first or second century to collect and manage water from Wadi al-Barada. It served as a critical water management system for this arid landscape over many centuries.
The structure maintained a direct connection to the Umayyad palace of Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi through a water supply canal system during the eighth century.
The structure is visible from multiple angles that reveal the full construction details and layout. Different viewpoints along the surrounding terrain help visitors understand how the dam functioned and how water was managed.
The reservoir created by the dam contained 5,000,000 cubic meters of water and stretched 1,500 meters in length and 800 meters in width.
