Apamea, Archaeological site in Al-Suqaylabiyah, Syria
The Roman ruins of Apamea extend across 2 kilometers, featuring a monumental colonnade with rows of tall granite columns along the main street.
Seleucus I Nicator established the city around 300 BC, naming it after his Persian wife Apama, transforming it into a commercial center of the Seleucid Empire.
The site contains one of the largest Roman theaters in Syria, with a capacity of 20,000 seats and a diameter of 139 meters.
Access to Apamea requires arrangements for private transportation and a guide, with multiple security checkpoints between Aleppo and the archaeological site.
The Great Hunting Mosaic, discovered in 1935, depicts detailed scenes of animal capture and now resides in the Cinquantenaire Museum in Brussels.
