Al-Azm Palace

Al-Azm Palace, Ottoman palace in Damascus, Syria

Al-Azm Palace is an Ottoman residence in Damascus featuring two main sections organized around courtyards. The spaces display geometric wall patterns, carved wooden ceilings, and intricate tile decorations, while stone lattice windows control light and views throughout the building.

As'ad Pasha al-Azm, an Ottoman governor of the Levant region, commissioned this residence in 1749. The building incorporated materials from earlier structures already standing on the site, reflecting how construction practices involved repurposing existing materials.

The palace layout reflects Ottoman social customs, with distinct areas for family life and public gatherings, each organized around decorated courtyards. Visitors can see how different rooms once served different social functions in daily life.

The palace can usually be explored across both floors, and comfortable shoes are recommended since there are many stairs and varying floor levels throughout. The rooms are often narrow and shift between darker and lighter spaces, so visitors should allow their eyes to adjust to changing light conditions.

The exterior walls display an alternating pattern of dark and light stones called ablaq masonry, a traditional Damascene building technique. This pattern served both a decorative and structural purpose, helping to reinforce the strength of the walls.
