Temple of Jupiter, Damascus, Roman temple ruins in Old City, Syria

The Temple of Jupiter consists of stone columns and wall segments near the Umayyad Mosque, demonstrating classical Roman architectural design patterns.

Construction of this religious complex began during Emperor Augustus reign and continued through Emperor Constantius II rule in the fourth century.

The temple transformed from a pagan shrine to Jupiter into a Christian church dedicated to John the Baptist before becoming part of the Umayyad Mosque.

Remains of the temple structure spread across multiple locations in Damascus Old City, with columns visible near the southern gate of the mosque.

The 1855 survey by Reverend Josias Porter documented forty columns or column fragments distributed among houses and shops surrounding the mosque area.
