Si Bun Rueang, District in Nong Bua Lamphu Province, Thailand
Si Bun Rueang is a district in Nong Bua Lamphu Province in northeastern Thailand. It is made up of twelve sub-districts and is crossed by the Phong River, which runs through a landscape of flat and gently rolling land.
The district was first set up as a minor administrative unit in 1965 and became a full district in 1969. This change reflected the growth of the local population and the development of the surrounding area.
The name Si Bun Rueang comes from Thai and roughly means 'place of fortune and prosperity'. During harvest time, villages across the district come together for local celebrations featuring music from the northeastern Thai tradition.
The district is connected to neighboring areas by local roads, making it easy to move between sub-districts by car. A visit during the dry season, from November to February, tends to be more comfortable as roads are easier to navigate.
Although it is a rural district, it is divided into around 153 villages, each with its own local administrative body. This level of decentralization is notable even by Thai standards, giving each community a degree of self-governance rarely seen in districts of this size.
