Tao Ngoi, Administrative district in Sakon Nakhon Province, Thailand
Tao Ngoi is an administrative district in Sakon Nakhon Province in northeastern Thailand comprising several communities and agricultural areas. The district lies in a region shaped by the Pung River, where farming is the main way of life.
The area began as a minor administrative division in 1978 before gaining full district status in 1991. This administrative change reflected the region's growing development.
The name comes from the Isan language and refers to turtles that once lived in abundance in the Pung River. Local people maintain this connection to nature through stories and the way they speak about their homeland.
The district is best reached by car, as it is well connected by rural roads. The best time to visit is during the drier season when road conditions are better.
A large turtle statue called Phaya Tao Ngoi stands in a park behind the district office. The statue symbolizes the area's longstanding relationship with these water creatures.
