Wanon Niwat is an administrative district in Sakon Nakhon Province in northeastern Thailand's Isan region. The district is divided into 14 sub-districts and 175 villages spread across its rural landscape.
The district was originally known as Kut Ling, a name referring to a place where water flow stopped near Ling trees. The name later changed to Wanon Niwat, reflecting the area's geography and water features.
Local artisans continue to produce handcrafted items such as pottery, woven cotton fabrics, and silk textiles using methods passed down through families. These crafts remain part of daily life in the villages, where visitors can see workshops and purchase directly from makers.
The district has a hospital and several healthcare facilities offering medical services to visitors and residents. When exploring the area, allow time for travel between villages since they are spread across the rural landscape.
Potash deposits were discovered in the late 1970s, attracting mineral exploration activities to the area. These geological resources brought economic interest to the district beyond its agricultural focus.
