Robot Building, Modernist office building in Sathorn district, Bangkok, Thailand
The Robot Building is an office structure in Bangkok's Sathorn district with an unconventional facade deliberately designed to resemble a robot. It features large, reflective glass windows shaped like eyes and two antennae on the roof, containing office space across twenty floors.
The structure was designed in 1986 by architect Sumet Jumsai as headquarters for Bank of Asia, later taken over by United Overseas Bank. Its completion marked a turning point in Bangkok's architecture by playfully expressing progress and innovation.
The building embodies Thailand's embrace of technological modernization in banking through its deliberate robotic design. Its mechanical form reflects the era's enthusiasm for automation and progress in financial services.
The entrance is located along South Sathorn Road, and visitors should know this is an active office building with limited public access inside. The structure photographs well from the street, and its distinctive form is easily spotted from various angles along the road.
The building features large concrete fasteners on its sides that look like mechanical bolts, reinforcing the robotic theme. These unexpected design elements make it one of Asia's most eccentric interpretations of high-tech architecture.
