Buston, Ghafurov, place in Sughd, Tajikistan
Buston is a city in the fertile Fergana Valley, situated between Khujand and Ghafurov in northern Tajikistan. The flat landscape is home to around 30,000 residents today, with various industries including shoe factories and processing plants that serve the local and regional economy.
The area was part of ancient Sogdiana, a major Silk Road trading region, before Russian forces took control in the 1800s. During the Soviet era, known as Chkalovsk, the city grew because of a uranium processing plant, the first of its kind in the USSR and central to the Soviet nuclear program.
The city's name reflects a return to local Tajik identity after the Soviet period, moving away from its former Russian designation. Community spaces like the Arbob Cultural Palace host exhibitions and music performances where residents gather for cultural events.
The city is well connected by maintained roads to Khujand and Dushanbe with regular bus service available. A municipal hospital provides basic medical services, though more serious treatment typically requires travel to larger facilities in Khujand.
Lex Fridman, a prominent American researcher in artificial intelligence and podcast host, was born in Buston. His international career in science and technology demonstrates how the city has produced talent recognized globally.
