Ben Arous

Ben Arous is an administrative region in northeastern Tunisia covering approximately 760 square kilometers (293 square miles). The area combines agricultural zones, industrial sites, and a section of Mediterranean coastline into one diverse region.

The region was established as a separate governorate in 1983 and has roots reaching back to ancient times. The plain of Sidi Fathallah witnessed a major military confrontation in 523 AD that shaped the area during the Byzantine period.

The region maintains farming traditions with cultivation of peaches, grapes, and wheat across many local communities. You can see these crops shaping the landscape in rural areas and influencing how people work throughout the seasons.

The region is organized into multiple administrative divisions, with El Mourouj being the largest population center. Travel is easiest during the milder months when agricultural areas are active and coastal sections are pleasant to visit.

The region contains Tunisia's primary commercial port at Radès, which handles the nation's main import and export traffic. This port connects the country to trade networks across the Mediterranean and serves as a key economic hub.
