Sakarya Province, Administrative province in Marmara Region, Turkey.
Sakarya Province sits in northwestern Turkey near the Marmara Sea, covering areas from Black Sea shores in the north to forested mountains inland. The river that gives it its name flows across the entire province, shaping the landscape with fertile plains and branching waterways.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, many immigrants from the Caucasus and the Balkans settled in the area, changing the population structure deeply. The current administrative organization took shape after the foundation of the Turkish Republic in the 20th century.
The province contains 16 districts with distinct characteristics, from traditional Ottoman architecture in Taraklı to modern urban developments in Adapazarı.
The province is easily reached from Istanbul and other major cities by highway and railway connections. Different districts offer different settings, from coastal towns to mountain landscapes inland.
The Sakarya River creates an intricate network of estuaries throughout the province, supporting agricultural activities and natural ecosystems.
