Lake Sülüklü, Natural landslide lake in Mudurnu, Turkey.
Lake Sülüklü is a mountain lake on the border between Sakarya and Bolu provinces in northwestern Turkey, set within Sülüklügöl Nature Park. It sits at around 1,200 meters above sea level and is surrounded by dense forest that runs right down to the water's edge.
The lake was formed in 1703 when a tectonic event triggered a landslide that created a natural hollow, which then filled with water. Since then, the basin has changed very little and the lake has kept roughly the same shape.
The name Sülüklü means "leech lake" in Turkish, which hints at the natural richness of the water. Locals in the area have long come here to fish for trout, a tradition that still continues today.
Getting to the lake starts from Akyazı, where an asphalt road leads to the access point, followed by a dirt track down to the shore. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow extra time, as the final stretch can be uneven.
Around 183 trees that were caught in the 1703 landslide are still standing upright under the water. On clear days or with a look beneath the surface, their submerged trunks are visible and give the lake an unusual appearance.
