Mount Bolu Tunnel, Road tunnel in Kaynaşlı and tourist attraction in Bolu, Turkey.
The Mount Bolu Tunnel is a road passage with two parallel bores, each containing three lanes in both directions, extending for about 3 kilometers through the mountain. The twin tubes are equipped with modern systems to handle continuous traffic on one of the country's key routes.
Construction started in 1993 through a partnership between Turkish and Italian companies and was completed in phases by 2007. The project represented a significant investment in improving transportation between the country's two major cities.
The tunnel connects Istanbul and Ankara by cutting through difficult mountain terrain and represents a major infrastructure project for Turkey. Passing through it shows how modern transportation networks now cross the country.
Vehicles must keep speeds to a maximum of 70 kilometers per hour, and hazardous materials cannot be transported through it. The lighting and ventilation system allows safe passage in all conditions.
The tunnel sits above the North Anatolian Fault, one of the region's most active seismic zones. It proved its engineering strength by withstanding a major earthquake in 1999 while still under construction.
